Joby Murphy (20) disappeared near the Lagan Weir in the early hours of Thursday morning (January 26).

THE heartbroken father of a missing Glengormley man has said his family are now playing “the waiting game” while search teams comb Belfast Harbour for his son’s body.

The search is continuing for Joby Murphy after the 20-year-old Elmfield man plunged into the River Lagan in the early hours of Thursday morning (January 26).

Joby had been out with friends at a Snow Patrol concert in the Odyssey Arena and later went drinking in one of the nightclubs at the complex.

He was last seen struggling to get into an anchored boat in Belfast Harbour after falling from the Lagan Weir pedestrian footbridge at around 1am.

Speaking to the Times at the scene of Joby’s disappearance, his father Joe said: “It’s just a waiting game now for us. We just want his body back and to be able to give him a proper burial.”

Specialist sonar search equipment was drafted in from London to help with the recovery operation and teams dispatched along the shores of the lough to search for the body.

The fire service, police divers and the PSNI helicopter have been combing the river and lough in search of Joby since his disappearance.

And family and friends have been holding a vigil in the Lagan Lookout just yards from the scene of Joby’s disappearance.

His father continued: “Everyone has been fantastic to us and a great support.

“Divers have been in the water everyday and we have been in the lookout since he went missing. They have been great letting us use the lookout and supplied us with all we need.

“The police liaison officer has been with us all through this time keeping us up to date on what’s happening and I can’t thank everyone enough for their kindness and support.”
