MANUFACTURING firm Saint-Gobain Weber has confirmed that up to 27 jobs are to go at its Northern Ireland base in Ballyclare.

The Times revealed last week that more than 20 jobs were under threat at the plant in the Dennison Industrial Estate, but at that time the company declined to comment on the situation.

This week the firm, which provides construction mortar products, confirmed that it plans to cease powder manufacturing operations at its Ballyclare facility by September 2013.

The company - the latest casualty of the slump in the construction sector - has entered into a consultation process with staff regarding the job cuts, and has stressed that it is making every effort to minimise lay-offs.

Some staff will be retained as part of an ongoing customer services and distribution team, and a small wet paste production unit at the Ballyclare site to supply Saint-Gobain Weber’s customers in Ireland.

A spokesperson for the company said that the ongoing decline in the building industry here has had a direct impact on the sustainability of the facility.

“Saint-Gobain Weber is set to end powder manufacturing at its Ballyclare site in September 2013. Up to 27 roles will be affected and we are making every effort to support our employees and their families.

“As well as offering extensive outplacement support and retraining, we are also making every effort to find alternative opportunities for our staff. This includes offers to relocate individuals to other areas in the Saint-Gobain group.

“We deeply regret the industry-wide trends that have made this decision necessary. However, all businesses involved in construction and house-building on this island have suffered from the same business challenges,” he commented.
