Great response to plea for help to save wartime history

BALLYCLARE military historian David McCallion has welcomed the “fantastic” response to his appeal for help to save his impressive War Years Remembered collection.

As part of the exhibition went on display in Ballyclare last month, David made an impassioned plea to local politicians and business owners for help finding a permanent home for his priceless collection in order to preserve it for future generations. He also made an appeal for funding to help secure the future of the under-threat exhibition, which includes memorabilia from the First and Second World Wars, as well as a Home Rule display and a 1940s house.

Speaking to the Times on Monday (March 4), David said he was amazed by the level of support he’s received from local people and businesses over the past few weeks, which has included a significant financial boost from Wrightbus and a number of generous individuals.

“The response has been fantastic; it’s been absolutely amazing,” he commented. “I’d just like to say a special thank you to all those who have made donations and those who have supported us in any way.”

While there has been nothing finalised as yet in terms of finding the exhibition a permanent home, it’s understood that David is discussing a number of options with several interested parties.

With more people still wanting to see the exhibition, it will be open to the public at Unit 32, Dennison Industrial Estate, Mill Road, Ballyclare on Saturday, March 9 between 10am and 6pm. Viewing is also available by appointment by contacting David on 07787 117271
