TRIBUTES have been paid to a Rathcoole pensioner who was tragically killed in a house fire last week.
Billy Meek, a much loved father and grandfather, died at his home in Carmeen Drive on Tuesday, January 31.
A large crowd of family and friends gathered at Wilton Funeral Home on Monday (February 6) for Mr Meek’s funeral.
Friend and neighbour, Roberta Duddy, lived next door to Mr Meek for more than 16 years.
Describing his death as “tragic”, she commented: “He was a very well liked and well respected man - by myself, my late husband Sammy and all the neighbours.
“He was the sort of gentleman that in his day could have fixed anything - TVs, cameras, anything. He loved to walk everywhere and he and his late wife Ina loved cycling. Sadly over the past few years he had suffered with ill health, but he was just such a lovely man. He’ll be sadly missed.”
Another neighbour, Annie Anderson, said the 83-year-old had been well liked by everyone in the street.
“It’s very sad. Billy was a very pleasant man who just went about his business, in and out of the house, doing his own thing.
“There was no-one in the street that didn’t know him. All the neighbours round here knew him and all looked out for him. He was well liked - I never heard him saying a bad word about anybody.”
