‘Love of children’ inspired Agnes’ work for Barnardo’s

TRIBUTES have been paid to a remarkable Glengormley woman who passed away last week, aged 100 years and six months.
Agnes Logan MBE was a founder member of the Barnardo’s Helpers Group in Glengormley and a much loved and respected member of the local community.
She remained active within the Barnardo’s Helpers Group in Glengormley for six decades, holding office locally and at Northern Ireland level.
Much of Agnes’ work over the past 60 years involved helping to raise funds for the children’s charity through organising and supporting a variety of activities such as concerts, bring and buy sales, collections, treasure hunts, competitions, coffee mornings, car boot sales and fireside quizzes.
Over that time the group’s goals were also greatly assisted by the efforts of its dedicated committee members, and by others such as Newtownabbey Borough Council, Dove Drama Group and Ballyclare Male Choir - not to mention the wonderful generosity extended to it by members of the public.
Back in 2000 Agnes’ tireless charity work was officially recognised when, at the age of 89, she was awarded the MBE in the Queen’s New Year’s Honour’s List. An elegantly turned out Agnes was presented with her award on April 27 that year by Prince Charles with whom she enjoyed a friendly chat at Buckingham Palace. The date was especially significant for Agnes as back in 1938, April 27 was also the day she wed her husband, Daniel .
During her lifetime Agnes was also delighted to meet with other members of the Royal family, including Princess Diana who was a Chairperson of Barnardo’s, and with Princess Margaret, to whom she presented a bouquet of flowers at a special event held at Blenheim Palace.
It was Agnes’ great love of children that inspired her enthusiasm for her fundraising work, combined with a desire to help those in desperate need of a helping hand.
Agnes passed away on Tuesday, January 24 and her funeral took place on Friday, January 27 at Ballylinney Presbyterian Church.
“A very large congregation of relatives and friends attended the service which was conducted by Rev. Emerson McDowell, Minister of Ballylinney, who was assisted by Rev. David Brice, Minister of Glengormley Presbyterian Church,” said Mrs Renee Alexander, one of Agnes’ longtime friends and a fellow member of the Barnardo’s Helpers Group in Glengormley.
“Rev. Uel Marrs from the Presbyterian Assembly and a great-nephew of Agnes led the tribute from the family.
“To mark her long association with the charity Barnardo’s and as a tribute to her work, a special poem arranged by an ex-Barnardo’s boy was read out by Mrs Sylvia Beggs, the present Chairperson of the Glengormley Barnardo’s Helpers Group.”
Agnes is survived by two children, 10 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.
