Makeover for Mossley Park

MOSSLEY Park, the first park in Newtownabbey to have received a Green Flag Award, is in line for some tender loving care over the next few months to improve the site for both local residents and wildlife.

The Green Flag Scheme recognises and rewards the best green spaces in the country, and Mossley Park is the proud holder of the prestigious award.

However, the presentation of the Green Flag is just the beginning; the council will be carrying out work over the next few months to continuously maintain and improve local green spaces, including Mossley Park.

“Hedgerow management will be a large focus of the work as the current hedgerow in Mossley Park has lots of gaps which need to be filled in in order to provide a suitable habitat for a huge variety of wildlife,” a council spokesperson explained.

“We will be repairing the gaps by hedgelaying and everyone is invited to come along to Mossley Park between 14 and 15 December to see this maintenance technique in practice.

“As well as the maintenance of the old hedgerows, children from local primary schools will be joining the council’s Biodiversity Officer during Tree Week to plant new hedgerows.”

The coniferous trees which are currently around the boundary of Mossley Park are also in need of a little TLC as they are reaching the end of their lifespan.

A phased removal plan will begin over the next few weeks and within the next ten years broadleaved trees will have replaced the old trees.

Through the Hedgerow Management project, which is supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, the council is hoping to hold a number of hedgelaying training courses.
