A MAN in his 40s was left fighting for his life following a serious assault in the Glengormley area in the early hours of Monday morning.

The 43-year-old was walking along the Carnmoney Road close to Coolehill Park around 1am when he, and the man he was with, were attacked by another man with a baseball bat.

The victim received serious head injuries and has been left fighting for his life in hospital.

The other man also required treatment, however, he has since been released from hospital.

Police closed the Carnmoney Road for a time on Monday morning while they investigated the scene of the crime.

Newtownabbey Mayor Victor Robinson condemned the attack outright, he said: “This is a brutal attack on two men coming out of Glengormley.

“Ninety nine point nine per cent of the community do not want this trouble, they just want these people to go away and for all this trouble to stop.”

Robert Hill, chairman of the Policing and Community Safety Partnership said he was “disgusted” by the incident.

He said: “It appears two men were coming home from a night out when they were set upon by people with baseball bats.

“Somebody had to go and collect that from somewhere to come after these people and that is very worrying. It has been pretty bad.

“We’ve had a lot of bomb alerts, the attack on the police last week, so there’s been a lot of unrest in the area.”

It’s thought the attacker may have been aged in his 40s and police have appealed for information.

Anyone who was in the area at the time and witnessed the incident, or who may have information on the assault is asked to contact CID in Newtownabbey on 0845 600 8000. Or, information can be passed anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
