Marathon effort for charity at Ballynure Presbyterian
BALLYNURE Presbyterian Church's Marathon Relay Race Co-ordinator Christine Murray, a well-known local runner, recently presented local Tearfund representative Julie McAfee with a cheque for over £1,400 as part of the £2,715.00 total raised as a result of the Church's endeavours on Belfast Marathon day. The remainder is being donated to the Church Building Fund.
Christine thanked all the runners, walkers and supporters who helped to make the effort worthwhile for the fourth successive year, with 29 runners representing the church, four of whom ran on to complete the full marathon.
Darren McAllister ran for the team as a guest from the Metropolitan Church and was placed 22nd overall out of 2,583 runners with a time of 2hrs 49mins, while Neill Walker and Gary Stitt both ran their first marathons.
The Ballynure mixed relay team of Darren McAllister, Christine Murray, Russell Hughes, Gary Montgomery and Alastair Black were the 4th mixed team home and placed 15th overall out of 1,980 teams with an excellent time of 2hrs 53mins.
Also this year, one of the youngest squads ever fielded consisted of Emma Gault, Peter Lockhart, Adam Hall, Stevie Forbes, Peter Boyd, Samuel Currie, Gary Stitt, Russell Hughes, Julie-Ann Crowe, and Sam Hall. Others making their debut this year and very successfully too, were Natalie Davidson, Jeff Drennan, Kelly Lewis, Ricky Mason, Sandra Park, James Rodgers, Mark Shields and James Stewart.
Christine extended a large thank you to 'regular' runners who supported Ballynure annually or bi-annually -Michael Matthews, Gary Montgomery, Alastair Black, Angela Owens, Gillian Den Haese, Neill Walker, Lisa Montgomery, Aubrey Crowe, Colin Mackey, Sam Hall, and Peter Boyd.
No race day would be complete either without the walkers with faithfuls Bertie and Freda Allen and newcomer Richard Wallace completing their 9-mile walk in 2hrs 30mins.
It is hoped Ballynure Presbyterian will again rise to the challenge in 2011. Thanks were also expressed to Thelma Black, Alison Crowe and Andrew Murray for preparing the much-appreciated food after the race.
