May Fair Charter to be examined by legal expert

A SOLICITOR is to look at the historic May Fair Charter to determine whether the traditional horse-trading fair can go ahead on Ballyclare's Main Street.

Last month, the Times broke the news that the 250-year tradition could be lost after the Police Service advised Newtownabbey Council that it does not have the power to close the road.

But after a meeting at the authority's Mossley Mill headquarters this week, the Fair's organising committee chairperson, Kathy Wolff revealed a solicitor is set to examine the charter.

Mrs Wolff said the organisers' preference is to stage the annual horse trading day on Main Street, but admitted they are exploring other options should the charter reveal that the road cannot be closed.
