Memorial match to remember John Lyttle

A FOOTBALL friendly will take place at the Valley Leisure Centre on Sunday for the second annual John Lyttle Memorial Cup.

The fundraising event was launched last year by friends and family of John following his untimely death in February of 2007 from cancer.

When the 31-year-old lost his battle with the disease, his friends clubbed together to organise the event, and the prize was a memorial cup presented by John’s mother.

“It’s a way for John’s friends and family to get together every year to remember him and at the same time raise money for charity,” said John’s friend and event organiser, Michael Gillen.

“John’s family, friends and people who knew him from school are involved and they have brought their own families on board so we are hoping to make a notable amount in memory of our friend.”

Last year, the team donated all proceeds to John’s family, but this year the sponsorship will be donated in full to Cancer Research UK.

Sponsorship forms have been circulating in the area recently in a bid to raise as much money as possible prior to the match, but sponsorship money will be gladly accepted on the day of the event.

John’s friends and family, who will be playing in Cancer Research UK colours, will form a team which will take on Greencastle Rovers at the playing fields at Valley Leisure Centre on Sunday, July 5, from 1pm.

A post-match event is being held at the Bellevue Arms on Sunday evening. Everyone is welcome to go along on the day, to enjoy the match and help raise vital funds for research into beating cancer, so do drop by and show your support.
