Motorist targeted in 'attempted hijacking'

DETECTIVES have appealed for information following what they have described as "an attempted hijacking" on the A8 Ballynure Road last Tuesday night (November 17).

At around 7.25pm police on patrol came across a white Citroen Berlingo car parked at the side of the A8 between the Houston’s Corner and Coleman’s Corner roundabouts. The 23-year-old male driver was badly shaken and was taken to hospital to be treated for bruising and a cut to his hand.

It is believed his injuries were sustained when four masked males in another vehicle rammed the Berlingo, forcing the vehicle to stop. The males then assaulted the victim before leaving the scene.

A PSNI spokesman confirmed that the incident is being treated as an attempted hijacking, adding that enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances.

Investigating officers have appealed for anyone who witnessed the incident to contact them on 0845 600 8000 or to call Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

Echoing that appeal, District Policing Partnership Chairman Etta Mann commented: “I am aware that the police are doing everything they can to try and identify the people concerned. I would appeal to anyone who was travelling on the A8 at the time and saw anything suspicious to report it to the police.”
