MP backs Rathfern residents' call for improved bus service

CALLS have been made for the Metro bus service to be extended into the Rathfern estate.

Local commuters have benefited from Metro buses being diverted through the area during the ongoing roadworks at Doagh Road. And now people are calling on Translink to make the detour a permanent fixture on its timetable.

Speaking to the Times this week, Rathfern resident Madeline Moore said: "At the minute we have nothing. We have the Town Service which goes as far as Abbeycentre, but no bus service that goes into Belfast.

"During the roadworks we had a proper bus service in the estate for a couple of weeks, which was brilliant. But now the works are finished we don't have a service again. The nearest place to get on a bus to Belfast is on the Doagh Road and that's too far for some of the elderly people to walk up and down the hill."

Mrs Moore stressed that there are already bus stops in place within Rathfern, adding that Translink would only have to make minor amendments to its current timetable in order to re-route the 2D service through the estate.

Having been contacted by a number of local residents about the issue in recent weeks, North Belfast MP Nigel Dodds has now called on Translink to extend its Metro service into the estate.
