RATHCOOLE residents have been left shocked and saddened following the death of an elderly man in a house fire in the estate on Tuesday afternoon (January 31).

The victim, named locally as Billy Meek and thought to have been aged in his 80s, died after a blaze broke out at his terraced bungalow in Carmeen Drive.

Three Fire and Rescue Service crews were called to the incident at around 3.30pm after a neighbour heard a smoke alarm going off.

One neighbour aged in his 50s, who tried to rescue the man from his home, was taken to hospital for treatment after breathing in smoke.

Late on Tuesday evening, forensic officers were still trying to establish the cause of the fire.

Macedon councillor Billy DeCourcy said that people in the area had been saddened by the man’s tragic death.

“I know the cause of the fire is still being investigated, but it seems it may well have been one of those terrible accidents,” he commented.
