Probe continues into teens' tragic deaths

THE investigation into the suspected gas leak which killed two Newtownabbey teenagers at a holiday apartment in Castlerock is "ongoing", the Health and Safety Executive has confirmed.

Life-long friends Aaron Davidson and Neil McFerran were found dead in the flat at Tunnel Brae Court by their distraught parents on August 3. The 18-year-olds, who were due to receive their A level and AS level exam results at Glengormley High School this week, died from suspected carbon monoxide poisoning.

Investigators from the Health and Safety Executive (HSENI) found that a liquefied petroleum gas appliance inside the property had not been working properly. They also issued a safety warning to other residents and business owners in the area who had gas work carried out by a Coleraine-based trader.

"We can't comment on the particulars of the investigation, other than to say that it is ongoing," a HSENI spokesman told the Times this week.

Meanwhile, students preparing for the new university term have been warned to check that their college accommodation has been properly checked for gas safety.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) is calling on those who live in a rented property to ask for the landlord's Gas Safety Record.
