'Quality education does not belong solely to grammar schools'
GLENGORMLEY High School Principal Lex Hayes has attacked proponents of the new post-primary transfer tests which are being used by grammar schools in place of the 11 plus exam.
Speaking at the school's annual awards day on Friday, Mr Hayes said: "I for one welcome the end of a high stakes selection system in primary schools that damages the self esteem of thousands of pupils who, in schools like ours, prove that they can rise to the loftiest academic heights. I believe that with the right conditions and funding every school can be a good school.
"As educators we definitely do not need to ask pupils of 10 years of age to sit five exams in a month in unfamiliar schools with unfamiliar teachers. Schools like Glengormley High School prove that excellent schools exist in all sectors of education and in our schools pupils will succeed academically and in life generally."
Reflecting on the past 12 months at Glengormley High, Mr Hayes said it had been "an excellent year" for pupils and staff.
He praised students and teachers for their hard work and dedication throughout the year, pointing to the school's superb GCSE, AS and A Level exam results.
"The standard of learning and teaching in our school across all subjects is better than ever before, this is shown by the external exam results. I would wish to congratulate all concerned, pupils, staff and parents for their efforts in this, the core function of the school," he commented.
On the sporting front, the Principal highlighted the many exceptional performances by individuals and teams in a variety of disciplines, saving special mention for kickboxer Glenn McFarlane, cyclist David Neill, runner Tom Magee and judo champions Lisa and Bobbi Cardwell. He also praised staff and pupils for their efforts across an array of extra-curricular projects, including drama, dance, music, environmental initiatives, charity fundraising and community work.
Concluding his address, Mr Hayes advised the pupils: "There are no limits to what you can achieve, you are only limited by your own aspirations and fears and perhaps those of others around you. If you work hard, listen to those who care about you, aim high and keep trying the sky is the limit for all of you."
