Rathcoole sculpture design revealed

THIS is an artist's impression of a new sculpture which set to be placed in the heart of Rathcoole.

The piece represents the strength of the family unit and will stand 3.1 metres high at Rathmullan Drive in the Diamond area. It is due to be on display before March next year.

Earlier this month, the Times revealed details of a plan which will see the erection of five new sculptures in the estate, which have been designed by local schoolchildren.

The four other pieces of public art, conceived by pupils at Newtownabbey Community High School, will be placed on open spaces at each of the main entrances to the estate. Each sculpture will have its own title - strength, excellence, decency, honour and honesty inscribed at its base.

With the new sculptures already in the making, questions have been again been raised as to whether residents would see the return of the 'Angel' of Rathcoole.

The copper sculpture, which had been on display since the estate was built in the 1950s, was removed to allow the demolition of a block of flats in 2003.

But the Housing Executive has since confirmed the 'Angel' will not be making a return alongside the new works of art and will remain in storage.

"It has not been feasible to include the 'Angel' sculpture in the current... initiative which involves erection of sculptures specifically designed for placement at the Rathcoole entrances and the Diamond," said a Housing Executive spokeswoman.

"The Housing Executive had arranged, some time ago, to re-site the 'Angel' on the Dunanney Centre building, however, this plan raised some concerns in the local community.

"While suitable options for relocation of the 'Angel' sculpture within Rathcoole are limited, the Neighbourhood Renewal Partnership is continuing to seek a solution that will be acceptable to all and in the meantime the sculpture remains in storage."
