ROUNDABOUT ROLE FOR WALLACE AND GROMIT

MOVIE stars Wallace and Gromit will soon be enjoying a grand day out somewhere in Newtownabbey.

A living floral sculpture of the cheese-loving duo riding their motorbike and sidecar is currently on display outside the council's Mossley Mill headquarters, but it'll soon be on the move.

The display has already been attracting a lot of interest, and it's sure to be a major talking point when it becomes the centrepiece of a display on a local roundabout.

"Wallace and Gromit will soon be on the move to one of the borough's roundabouts, which will be home to the fun duo for the coming months. Sponsorship from local businesses will cover the cost of the licensed hire of the 3D floral sculpture and it will be maintained by the council's expert horticultural staff," a council spokesperson revealed.

Newtownabbey's roundabouts are having a massive makeover as part of the programme to mark the council's 50th anniversary year. The plans to enhance the appearance of a number of roundabouts through planting, public art and environmental improvements are in the final stages, with several roundabouts due to be completed this month.

The council's Parks Manager, Margaret Lindsay commented: "Wallace and Gromit are much loved animated characters, instantly recognisable by all age groups. The council wanted to choose something exciting and fun which the community would enjoy seeing during the area's 50th anniversary celebrations. The roundabout improvements will make a big impact on the area and the environment for those who live, visit and work in the locality.

"We have been researching this project for some time and have looked at how it has been successful in other council areas. We are working in partnership with local businesses and the DOE Roads Service and there is great interest from local companies wanting to get involved in sponsoring this exciting new environmental improvement project."

Sponsorship bids for the roundabouts are currently being submitted to the council.
