Sara invites Class of 89/90 to Hopefield reunion

A FORMER pupil of Hopefield High School is organising a reunion for the Class of 89/90 at Nortel Social Club on Saturday, March 6.

Sara Greenberg, 36, from Rathcoole decided to organise the event after hearing about the death of a past pupil of the school.

"It is a 20th anniversary school reunion for the Hopefield High School Class of 89/90. I decided to organise it after learning that another person from our year had died, bringing the the total of tragic deaths of former pupils from that time, to four," said Sara.

"The person who died happened to be my first boyfriend and although I didn't keep in touch or see him that often it made me realise that there were a lot of people that I had spent the best years with, and hadn't seen since we left school.

"I originally was going to organise a small gathering of six or seven people, but the more I asked around the more people seemed to be interested, so I decided to organise a proper reunion.

"So far it has just been word of mouth and I'm expecting around 50, but I'm sure there are others further afield who haven't heard about the reunion, which is why I wanted to publicise it through the local newspaper.

"It may be a one off, so I wouldn't like anyone to miss out."

Sara who works as an accounts manager with the courier company City Air Express, said she was also hoping that the bash would help raise some funds for a very worthwhile cause.

"The tickets are 5 each and although I needed to sell about 35 to cover my expenses I had wondered what I would do with any extra money raised.

"None of the four people who died, died of cancer, but recently I have been hearing of more and more people that I know who are being diagnosed with cancer. Someone who went to our school but was a couple of years younger, was diagnosed with terminal cancer only last year.

"It is a scary disease, and I just thought I wish we could find out what makes this happen and Cancer Research is one of the organisations trying to find this out. I will also be running a ballot on the night to try and raise a few more pounds for the charity.

"We were in school all through the 80s so I decided to make the reunion an 80s Disco which is being held in Nortel Social Club, Monkstown Avenue, Newtownabbey on Saturday, March 6 at 8pm.

"I would ask anyone who was at our school in those years to come along and meet up with old friends. If anyone would like more information, or tickets, please contact myself, Sara Greenberg on 07711 009448."
