Sewerage upgrade works may lead to road closures

MOTORISTS who use the Manse Road have been warned to expect several possible road closures over the next five months.

Northern Ireland Water is currently carrying out sewerage improvements along the busy commuter route. And the company has warned that the work is likely to continue until July.

Single-lane closures have already taken place to facilitate the work, with a temporary Stop/Go traffic management system being used to keep the road open.

However, a spokesperson for NI Water revealed this week that talks are ongoing with DRD Roads Service about whether or not complete road closures will have to take place in the coming months to allow the essential work to be completed.

“NI Water is carrying out sewer improvement work on Manse Road. The work includes constructing a new storm sewer from the Ballyclare Road to Campbell Road.

“In order to connect the road gullies to the new sewer, road crossings are required on this road. Unfortunately, this involves road closures due to the existing road lane spans being minimal and the overhang of trees and hedges restricting working room. This is also a health and safety precaution to ensure the safety of the public and the workers,” the spokesperson explained.

“NI Water is liaising with Roads Service to ensure a limited number of road closures. However, at the minute it is estimated there are eight road closures yet to be confirmed.

“Additional work to be completed from Campbell Road to Christine Road will involve approximately four road closures. Again, this is to be confirmed. Closures are to take place at the weekends, with specific dates to be confirmed with Roads Service. Work is scheduled to finish in July and will enable NI Water to meet NI Environment Agency standards and will improve the water quality in the nearby watercourse,” she said.

The spokesperson confirmed that discussions are still taking place to determine whether or not the route will have to be shut to traffic completely during the planned road closures.

“NI Water is still in discussion with Roads Service regarding the road closures and therefore not in the position to comment on the specific details of these,” she added.
