Space for more graves is unearthed at Carnmoney, councillors told

COUNCIL officers have identified land at Carnmoney Cemetery that could be developed to provide additional grave space, it has been revealed.

Burial space at the borough’s largest cemetery is fast running out, and the council is still searching for suitable land for a new graveyard. However, members of the local authority’s Development Committee were informed this week that space has now been identified at Carnmoney Cemetery that could be developed for additional burial sites.

The meeting was informed that officers will report back to the committee with further details in due course.

Meanwhile, the committee agreed that consultants fees totalling £28,492.60, excluding VAT, be approved to allow test digs to be carried out as part of the assessment of the nine areas of land shortlisted last year as potential sites for a new cemetery within the borough.

While details of most of the sites under consideration have not yet been made public by the council, it’s understood they include council-owned and privately-owned land in areas such as Valley Park, Ballyearl, Whiteabbey and Houston’s Corner.
