'Time to put a halt on town centre take-aways'

LOCAL councillors have raised serious concerns about the number of hot food take-aways in the heart of Glengormley.

With dozens of chippies, kebab shops and other carry-outs already located in the town centre, calls were made at the council's monthly Planning Committee meeting on Monday night for a moratorium on new fast food outlets.

While the council did register its opposition to any more take-aways getting planning permission several years ago, there was never any official policy put in place to prevent further applications from going through. However, following claims that plans have now been put forward for two or three more hot food outlets in the centre of the town, several councillors have called for a policy change to put a halt to any more take-aways.

Describing Glengormley as "the take-out capital of the world", independent councillor Brendan Carlin claimed that there are 42 hot food premises in a half-mile stretch of road through the town centre, 39 of which operate a take-away service.

"The last thing we need in Glengormley is any more take-aways or hot food carry-outs. If there is a serious intention to regenerate the centre of Glengormley and attract more investment into the town centre then this problem has to be dealt with in a serious way," he said.

"We need to get the ball rolling to change planning policy to put a stop to any more carry-outs," he added.
