Victorious return to Fivemiletown for Ballyduff Band
MEMBERS of Ballyduff Silver Band are celebrating after winning the Brass in Concert competition in Fivemiletown for the second year in succession.
The Newtownabbey group, conducted by William Hill, were three points ahead of second placed Roughan Band from Ballygawley. Third place went to 3rd Carrickfergus Band.
Music adjudicator Alan Morrison described Ballyduff's performance as "a really well thought out and original programme that utilised the assets of the band."
Entertainment adjudicator Beverley Weir added that the band's performance was "varied, versatile and imaginative".
Ballyduff's Ulster-Scots themed programme had an unusual opening, with the traditional march or fanfare being replaced by the haunting "Suil A Ruin," sung by cornet player Jenny Hill.
The band's repertoire included "Galanthia," arranged by the band's conductor for the contest, and "I'll take you home again Kathleen," featuring soloist Ian McClinton on flugel horn.
Ballyduff's performance of "Phil the Fluter's Ball" proved a real winner - and this was followed in complete contrast by a beautiful arrangement of the Scottish hymn, "Stracathro".
The band's finale called on all aspects of the Ulster Scots culture, starting with Matthew Weir on snare drum and again featuring Jenny Hill, this time as a dancer. The icing on the cake was the appearance of the Lambeg drum played by the band's conductor.
