The board of governors and teaching staff at Monkstown Community School have been promised the full support of the North Eastern Education and Library Board (NEELB) following a critical Department of Education inspector’s report.

In a statement, the NEELB said: “The Education and Training Inspectorate has published an inspection report on Monkstown Community School, which has concluded that the school’s performance has not been satisfactory and has called for improvements in a number of areas. As a result, the school requires formal intervention procedures in order to rectify the situation.

“Both the North Eastern Board and the school’s board of governors have accepted the findings and have agreed to work closely together to bring about improvements in all the areas identified by the inspectors.

“An action plan is being drawn up to address the issues and the board’s Curriculum Advisory and Support Service will provide intensive support to the school staff and governors to help bring about the necessary improvements in the interests of all the pupils.”

Monkstown Community School Principal, Nigel Pell-Ilderton added: “Our pupils’ education is paramount and it is disappointing that the findings were unsatisfactory, but we are determined to work with the support of the North Eastern Board to make sure standards are raised.

“Information will be sent to all parents outlining in more detail the school’s response to the report’s findings.

“The Education and Training Inspectors will monitor the school’s progress with a follow-up inspection to measure the improvements over the next 12 to 18 months.”
