‘We fear our son won’t be the last’

THE devastated family of a man killed at the Mallusk landfill site have vowed to continue to fight for tougher safety laws to be applied in Northern Ireland.
The Layland family have taken their campaign to the First Minister after David (23) was found under hundreds of tonnes of rubbish at the site, following a near 30-hour search operation after the Ballyclare man went missing.
The newlywed was a Site Supervisor at the Biffa Waste Services-operated facility at Cottonmount, where he died in August 2008.
At the recent inquest into his death the jury returned a verdict which stated they were satisfied Mr Layland died from multiple injuries sustained when he was crushed by heavy machinery on the site.
However, they said there was not enough evidence to come to a conclusion as to how exactly the accident happened.
Following the verdict, Mr Layland’s father, Derek, said he was left feeling “numb”.
