A RATHCOOLE pensioner whose flat was flooded after workmen damaged a pipe in a neighbouring property has called on the Housing Executive to tell him why it has taken three months to process his claim for repairs.
Harry Taylor revealed how in October last year a contractor working for the Housing Executive allegedly ruptured a water pipe in the flat above his Carnreagh Bend home, causing water to pour through his walls and ceiling, flooding his living room and hallway.
“The whole place was flooded,” he told the Times. “The water was coming in above the living room door, pouring through a hole in the wallpaper. The walls were soaked, the wallpaper’s wrecked and the whole floor’s lifting - it all needs replaced.”
The 74-year-old ex-serviceman submitted a claim for the cost of repairing the damage - redecorating the living room and hallway and laying a new laminate floor. He is also claiming for the cost of two gas cylinders he used in a ‘Superser’ heater he borrowed in order to dry out the flat, and a mat that was ruined in the flood and had to be thrown out - a grand total of around £900.
Mr Taylor, who has been a Housing Executive tenant for 20 years, says he just wants to know why he has had to wait so long for his claim to be processed.
A spokesperson for the NIHE confirmed that Mr Taylor’s claim for the cost of repairs to his flat is “still being considered”, and that they will be in contact with him again “as soon as possible.”
