Women raise over £1,000 for charity in wedding dress walk
FOR most women the only walk they get to do in their wedding dress is the one down the church aisle.
But a group of big-hearted women from Newtownabbey dusted down their matrimonial frocks and put their best foot forward recently to raise over 1,000 for charity.
Rush Park woman Lesley Glass, along with her two sisters Georgie Hawthorne and Lorraine Gillespie organised the wedding dress walk to collect funds for the Northern Ireland Hospice. Their late mother, Elizabeth Iris Wilson, was cared for by the hospice.
“We walked from the shops at King’s Park and on to Abbots Cross and finished at The Diamond in Rathcoole,” Lesley told the Times. “At each of the three areas we received tremendous support from local businesses who donated prizes for our raffle.
“The weather on the day of the walk couldn’t have been better and we were well received by everyone who saw us along the way. The girls really enjoyed getting back into their wedding dresses and some even came in bridesmaid frocks while others came dressed as mother of the bride.
“I think it’s nice to do something for the charity and give something back. We really want to thank everyone who donated and bought ballots.”
The event, which was inspired by an article in a national magazine, was followed by an evening of entertainment at Whitehouse Working Men's Club. A cheque presentation was subsequently made to Northern Ireland Hospice representative, Naoimh Quinn.
“I would like to sincerely thank all those involved for raising such a fantastic sum of money for the Hospice through this unique and fun event,” said Naoimh. “We rely heavily on voluntary income to sustain our services, and with the local community support, we endeavour to continue the work both at Hospice and at the patient’s home.”
Northern Ireland Hospice is a local charity caring for local people.
Each year Northern Ireland Hospice cares for over 3,000 adults, children and young people with life-limiting and life threatening conditions. It also support their families and carers. Care is provided in the hospice and in the community. It is available 24-hours a day, every day of the year.
