Man remains critically ill after fall from bonfire

THE 38-year-old man who was seriously injured after falling from the top of New Mossley bonfire at the weekend remains in a critical condition in the Royal Victoria Hospital.

The man, named locally as Tommy Atkinson, climbed to the summit of the 60ft high stack of wooden pallets at Manse Way in the estate on Saturday morning (July 2).

A resident living nearby saw him and was so concerned for his safety, phoned the police.

As officers arrived at the scene at around 8am, Mr Atkinson fell from the bonfire, sustaining serious injuries.

At the time of going to print on Tuesday, a spokesman for the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust confirmed that he was “still in a critical condition” in the Royal Victoria Hospital.
