Mother and son are lucky to escape arson attack

A WOMAN and her nine-year-old son were lucky to escape without injury after arsonists attacked their Rathfern home last week.

Shortly before 3am on Thursday, March 28 fire crews were called to the woman’s house at Tulleevin Drive after reports that two bins had been set alight against the front door of the property and burning papers pushed through the letterbox.

According to the Fire and Rescue Service, the occupants of the terrace house were alerted to the incident when their dogs began to bark.

It’s understood the woman and her son had exited the house prior to the arrival of firefighters, who were able to quickly extinguish the blaze.

A PSNI spokesman said that investigations into the incident are ongoing and that a motive for the attack has not yet been established.

Investigating officers have appealed for anyone with information to contact them at Newtownabbey Station on 0845 600 8000.
