THE mother of a Rathcoole schoolboy who was injured in a hit-and-run incident at the weekend says her son is lucky to be alive.

Five-year-old Josh Patton was struck by a car as he crossed the road with friends on Sunday afternoon, just yards from his Nendrum Gardens home.

According to witnesses, the driver of the silver coloured Vauxhall Corsa stopped momentarily, but then drove on, leaving Josh lying injured in the street.

The Abbots Cross Primary P1 pupil was taken to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast where he was treated for bruising to his head and injuries to his right leg and arm.

“He’d gone out to play with his friends on the wee green across the road. We heard the screech of the car and then we just heard our son screaming. I ran over and opened the door and my worst fears were confirmed,” Heather Patton told the Times.
