The Year 9 Eco Club pupils visited Gaelectric’s Carn Hill wind farm near Straid on Wednesday, June 15, to coincide with the annual environmental event.

The trip provided the students, who are currently studying Alternative Energies, with an opportunity to see how Northern Ireland is meeting its renewable energy objectives.

Welcoming the pupils, Patrick McClughan, Head of Corporate Affairs at Gaelectric said: “We all need to appreciate the potential of wind power and the opportunities that exist to reshape our energy systems, decarbonise our economies and boost jobs and growth.

“This visit by Year 9 Geography pupils from Cedar Lodge School to Carn Hill wind farm provides these young people with an opportunity to find out more about wind energy, how it can be captured to generate electricity and how this can in turn benefit local communities.”

Una Orr, Key Stage Leader at Cedar Lodge School added: “The year 9 pupils found the visit to Carn Hill wind farm fascinating. They got to see how a wind turbine within a wind farm works, the volume of energy that it can generate and how this is transferred into electricity to meet the demand of nearly 8,000 homes on an annual basis. It has been really useful for their studies and it was great to be undertaking the visit as part of Global Wind Day.”

Global Wind Day is coordinated by the European Wind Energy Association (EWEA) and the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC).
