Newtownabbey Borough Council hosted a meeting at Mossley Mill recently for members of the local deaf community.
Council officers attended and provided a range of information about council services including leisure services, Theatre at The Mill, waste management, marketing and PR, development services and customer relations and answered any queries.
Those attending were welcomed to the event by Mayor Fraser Agnew.
“The council are delighted to host this meeting as we are keen to establish links with residents and to ensure that as much as possible is done to meet local needs,” he explained.
The meeting was facilitated by Susan Campbell, Community Advocacy Officer with the British Deaf Association, in conjunction with Helen McBride, Corporate Improvement Manager with Newtownabbey Council.
The British Deaf Association provided two interpreters and a note taker for the meeting.
Following the meeting, Helen McBride commented: “I think the meeting proved to be of benefit to all those attending.
“We were able to provide information on our services, and the deaf community had the opportunity to raise issues and to make us more aware of how we could meet their specific requirements.”
