Grants available for life-saving equipment

Applications are now open for the scheme, which will provide sports clubs and community groups with 75 per cent of the funding needed to purchase a defibrillator.

The programme is open to local sports clubs and community groups who are based within the Antrim and Newtownabbey borough.

Clubs and community groups who have a minimum of two members AED (Automated External Defibrillator) trained, or who can demonstrate they have members working towards a qualification are eligible to apply.

Sport Northern Ireland/National Governing Body recognised clubs or groups registered with Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council Community Services are also covered in the eligibility criteria.

The closing date for applications is Thursday, March 31.

Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Cllr Thomas Hogg is delighted to announce this new programme. He said: “The defibrillator scheme is a fantastic opportunity for sports clubs and community groups to apply for this life saving device. We are delighted to work in partnership with Antrim Lions Club, who have committed to fund 50 per cent of the cost of the defibrillator, with council funding 25 per cent. I would encourage any club or group who do not have access to a defibrillator to apply now.”

John Mooney, President of Antrim Lions Club, added: “This initiative to fund life-saving defibrillators is another example of how we are committed to improving the lives of our local community. There are around 1,400 cardiac arrests occurring each year in Northern Ireland outside of hospitals so it is vital that communities have access to these life-saving devices.”
