The Newtownabbey Way walking and cycle route is to be protected for future generations as a nature reserve.
Earlier this year the council made a submission to the Council for Nature Conservation and the Countryside (CNCC) to designate the Newtownabbey Way a Local Nature Reserve (LNR).
An LNR is a protected area of land designated by a local authority because of its special natural value to the community and its educational value to schools.
At their March meeting, members of the council’s Leisure Committee were informed that correspondence has been received from the CNCC to confirm that the Newtownabbey Way, which runs from Corr’s Corner to Whiteabbey, should be designated a Local Nature Reserve.
It’s understood that new signage publicising the pathway’s LNR status will be erected along the route in the coming weeks.
