Police issue warning about telephone scam

Police have issued a warning to local householders following reports of a telephone scam occurring in the area.

“A male rings and claims to be from HMRC (Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs) and they are owed thousands in unpaid tax. He then goes onto demand immediate payment over the phone by way of iTunes vouchers, threatening arrest and cancellation of bank cards if his demands are not met,” a spokesman for PSNI Newtownabbey explained.

“Never give any personal details out over and phone and definitely not money in any format.”

Newtownabbey Police have urged people to make their friends and family aware of the scam.
