BALLYCLARE Chamber of Trade has expressed shock and anger over the introduction or more pay and display parking in the town.

In June, Roads Service is to introduce a tariff of 40p per hour for the 33 parking spaces at Harrier Way which are currently free of charge.

This will add to the 153 spaces in the town which motorists already have to pay to park in. However, on-street car parking will remain free for the time being.

Ballyclare Chamber of Trade President, Darren Black said they had campaigned for parking charges to be abolished in the town.

“The Chamber is totally against doing away with the free car parking within the town centre,” he said.

“This makes it impossible for staff who work in the town to park, deters customers from shopping in the town and does not benefit local businesses or people and only goes to fill Stormont coffers.

“There needs to be some joined-up thinking at Stormont about our town centres.

“While one department is giving money to revitalise our town centres through regeneration another is putting measures in place that makes it impossible for them to survive.”
