A CARNMONEY pensioner has spoken of his shock after a spring clean at his Fairview home led to bomb alert last Friday (April 15).

Roads were closed and homes evacuated for most of the afternoon while army technical officers examined two suspect devices.

Pensioner William Scott was shocked to discover the pipe bombs in a plastic bag while he was clearing out his garage.

“It was something I hadn’t done since I moved in four years ago,” said the 71-year-old.

“There was all sorts in the garage roofspace, like odd doors and bits and pieces, but the very last thing I picked out was a plastic bag.

“I opened it to have a look and it was two pipe bombs.”
