Plucky pensioner fights off knife-wielding robber

Detectives investigating an incident in Glengormley on Saturday afternoon (November 7) during which an elderly lady was threatened by a teenager wielding a knife have appealed for witnesses to come forward.

Sometime between 2.45pm and 3.15pm, the pensioner was approached by a male in the Glenvarna Drive area. He produced a knife and demanded money from her.

The lady defended herself with her walking stick and the male made off empty handed.

He is described as being aged in his late teens, about 5’6” or 5’7” tall and was wearing a brown woolly jacket.

Detective Inspector Chris Millar said: “I would ask anyone who may have witnessed this incident or who may have any information about it to contact detectives at Newtownabbey Police Station on the non emergency number 101, quoting reference number 739 of 07/11/15. Or if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details, they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
