Police seize pipebombs in Rathcoole

POLICE seized five 'viable' pipebomb devices and a large quantity of ammunition during a planned search of a property at Carmeen Drive in the Rathcoole estate on Tuesday evening.

A PSNI spokesperson confirmed that a number of controlled explosions were carried out during the operation.

A 22-year-old man was arrested and taken to the Serious Crime Suite at Antrim where he is said to be helping police with their enquiries.

East Antrim MLA San Neeson described the discovery of the illegal munitions as "very concerning."

"Hopefully this is not a sign of tensions increasing in the locality. The last thing the area needs is thugs causing problems. The wider community has no time at all for individuals who would endanger lives and whip up tensions," he said.

DUP alderman Nigel Hamilton added: "I think we should all be grateful that the police have had this success and hopefully it will lead to further arrests. We cannot allow this type of terror campaign to be waged in our community."
