A GROUP of Rathcoole residents came together last Friday evening to remember absent family and friends.

Organised by Ardgart Place woman Georgina Hamilton, the residents funded a special Christmas tree for the street as well as having a visit from Santa, carol singing and a DJ.

On the tree they placed photo baubles to remember those family and friends who sadly could not share in this year’s Christmas celebrations.

Georgina, a mother-of-three, said: “My mother and father, Ruth and George Boyle died this year just 15 weeks apart.

“We always spent Christmas together and this year I did not have the heart to celebrate. I would always do a big Christmas, but this year I couldn’t face it and even bought a pop-up tree.

“But I thought it would be nice to get all the neighbours together and we could have a special ceremony to remember those loved ones who can’t be with us and a bit of a family fun day for the kids.

“Along with my best friend Diane Wilson, we got all the residents together and organised this event ourselves.

“Hopefully it is something that maybe catches on and we’ll see in other streets in Rathcoole and in Newtownabbey.”
