THE Principal of Newtownabbey Community High School, Mr Bertie Holmes, has decided to call it a day after almost four decades as a teacher.

The Larne man started his career as a student teacher in Rathcoole Secondary in February 1973, before taking on a permanent position as a science teacher in the school later that year.

He made the move to Newtownabbey Community High School following Rathcoole High’s merger with Hopefield in 1994.

Mr Holmes has witnessed many changes within the education system over the last four decades, including the ongoing ICT revolution.

“It’s amazing how things have changed over the years - in those days there were three secondary schools in Rathcoole, but with the changing demographic of the area Stella Maris closed down and Rathcoole and Hopefield merged.
