Students Skillbuildsuccess

NORTHERN Regional College students tested their skills at the Newtownabbey campus’s Skillbuild competition.

The competition, which was organised by the Faculty of Building, Engineering and Science, is designed to test and challenge the ability of its students and apprentices working in the construction trades.

The winners of the individual award categories will now go on to face students form across Northern Ireland in the Skillbuild NI regional finals of the competition in March which will be hosted by the NRC.

Ronnie Laverty, NRC Head of Faculty for Building, Engineering and Science said: “We had an excellent cohort of students competing in these competitions this year and the standard was exceptional high.

“At NRC we recognise the importance of supporting young people in their chosen trades and as part of their training we encourage them to participate in competitions.”

He added: “The competition gives the trainees the confidence to improve their own skills while providing them with the opportunity to test their skills against their college peers.

“This year, students competed in brickwork, site carpentry, electrical installation, industrial heating, bench joinery, lead sheetwork, plastering and drywalls systems and the plumbing trades. The success and hard work by both the students and staff was very evident throughout the competition and we look forward to the forthcoming Regional Skillbuild events.”
