Volunteer Lisa Sloan from Newtownabbey has received the Fundraising Volunteer of the Year Award from British Heart Foundation (BHF) Northern Ireland for her relentless determination in the fight against heart disease.
Lisa was one of seven Northern Ireland Heart Hero Award winners recognised during Volunteers Week at BHF Northern Ireland’s annual supporters’ conference in Dunsilly, Antrim.
Every volunteer is a real hero for BHF Northern Ireland, but Lisa’s valiant fundraising in memory of her brother shows real community spirit.
Following the sudden death of her brother-in-law Robert, Lisa and her family set up the Robert Sloan Memorial Fundraising Group, which has raised over £3,600 and has more events planned for 2015.
Lisa said: “It was a lovely surprise to be recognised as a heart hero but volunteering and raising money for such an important cause is incredibly rewarding.”
Volunteering your time with BHF Northern Ireland helps to fund vital research into heart disease and helps to save lives. BHF Northern Ireland recently launched a new campaign which will raise money for research that will help to track down all the genes responsible for inherited heart conditions, which affect over 17,000 people in Northern Ireland. By giving their time, volunteers like Lisa are helping the charity to develop new life-saving tests and treatments in the future.
BHF chief executive Simon Gillespie said: “I am delighted we can recognise Lisa’s commitment. Lisa’s passion and drive for fundraising help us continue our life-saving work.”
“We need people in the Newtownabbey area to join our fight for every heartbeat in Northern Ireland. Every pound raised, every minute of your time and every donation to our shops will help make a difference to local people’s lives. There is no better time to find out how volunteering your time can make a difference, so please get in touch today.”
BHF Northern Ireland relies on donations of time and money to continue its life-saving work. To find out more about how to get involved, please contact Gary Wilson, Fundraising Volunteer Manager on 028 6863 3113 or by email on email@example.com or visit bhf.org.uk.
