Two convicted of benefit fraud

TWO people from Newtownabbey were convicted at Belfast Magistrates Court on Tuesday, July 31 for claiming benefits they were not entitled to.

Ann-Marie Backes (53) of Burnside Park, Doagh claimed Income Support totalling £14,218 while failing to declare employment. She was give a conditional discharge for 12 months and ordered to pay court costs of £40.

Anthony Harrison (20) of Blackrock Square, Hydepark was given two months imprisonment suspended for one year and ordered to pay court costs of £22 for wrongful encashment of Jobseekers Allowance totalling £362.

Both are also required to repay any outstanding money they wrongfully obtained to the Social Security Agency.
