POLICE have confirmed that they are treating two serious fires at commercial premises in Bawnmore and Mallusk at the weekend as arson.

Shortly before midnight on Friday night (October 21), a fire was started inside a large derelict factory at Dandy Street, off the Shore Road. An outbuilding at the property was also set alight.

Fire crews from Glengormley, Belfast and Lisburn battled for two hours to extinguish the blaze.

The former factory was extensively damaged and people are being warned to stay away from the property as the building is now unsafe.

In a separate incident on Saturday afternoon (October 22), firefighters were called to the old Belmont film processing plant at Michelin Road, Mallusk at around 4.45pm.
