Pupils '˜ReadOn' in support of children's charity

Glengormley High School's Year 8 students raised an amazing £1,606.05 for The Northern Ireland Cancer Fund for Children this year by engaging in its '˜ReadOn 2016' programme.

The children challenged themselves to read as many books as possible within a seven day period and collected sponsorship from family and friends.

As well as raising money for a wonderful charity, the initiative encouraged the pupils to read more than they normally would on a daily basis. Everyone loved getting involved and the school and charity were thrilled with the total raised.

Rebecca Oates from the charity visited the school’s newly refurbished Library recently to receive the cheque from Claire Shearer, literacy co-ordinator, and pupils who took part in ReadOn.

Miss Shearer thanked all the students who participated, along with the school staff, parents, family and friends who supported them in their reading.

Here’s what some of the ReadOn participants had to say:

• Kacey McTernaghan - “We did a sponsored reading week to raise money for children with cancer and their families. I have enjoyed doing it because I am doing something good for people and I love to know that I am helping children my age. I think everyone should do it and make a difference.”

• Asha Mullan - “I really enjoyed ReadOn. I don’t usually like reading but my teacher helped me find a book that made me enjoy it. I enjoyed doing this because I have a few relatives with cancer so I felt like I was helping. It’s a good thing to read for these children and help them get through their cancer.”

• Abbie Shaw - “In English class we took part in ‘ReadOn’ where we read as much as we could for seven days and raised money for a charity called NICFC. I enjoyed it because I love to read and this meant I could do it all week! It’s also an easy way to raise money for children all over Northern Ireland that are suffering from cancer.”
