Looking back... Group makes plea against violence

The Rathcoole Community Group issued an appeal in May 1986.

The group called on every member of the community not to allow themselves to be drawn into acts of violence. This came after a spate of recent incidents of vandalism and intimidation in the estate.

In a statement to the Press, the Rathcoole Group appealed for young people in particular to take heed of their message. They unreservedly condemned the violence against any section of the community and expressed particular abhorrence of attacks on members of the Royal Ulster Constabulary, their homes and their families.

Attacks had taken place in the area following the signing of the Anglo Irish Agreement.
