Looking back... Headlines from July 1995

The Environment Minister announced that a section of the A8 carriageway was to be dualled in July 1995.

Environment Minister Malcolm Moss outlined that just under £6m was to be spent to dual a 3km section of the road during the programme period between 1995 and 2000.

Stage one of the project was set to commence in February 1998.

• Meanwhile that same week, a writer from Whitehead took the fight against Magheramorne superdump to US Vice-President Al Gore.

In a letter to Mr Gore, John McClelland from Balfour Avenue said: “As a local resident and representing Islandmagee and District Conservation Society, I am therefore writing to you because your well documented record on conservation issues suggests that you would take a sympathetic stance regarding our efforts to underline the injustices of the proposal.”

• That same week, Edmund Rice Primary School won the Hightown Shield.

The six-a-side mini-Gaelic competition, part of the Youth Sport programme, attracted eight schools from the region.

The competition was organised by Edmund Rice College. The victors defeated Sacred Heart in the final, with just a single point separating the sides.
