Academy safe after win over Dungannon

ACADEMY will complete their league programme this weekend against Cooke Collegians at Shaw's Bridge safe in the knowledege they will be playing Division 1 Section 2 cricket next season.

After having briefly flirted with relegation, Mark Shields’ side secured continued membership of Section 2 with a weekend win against Dungannon.

Failure to get anything from the clash at Newforge plunged the County Tyrone side into deeper trouble at the bottom of the table where it seems likely that two from Dungannon, Cregagh and Dunmurry will face the drop at the end of the season.

When Shields won the toss he opted to take first knock, but he was back in the changing rooms in the first over without scoring, while his partner, Scott Sloan, went on to top score with 48.

Brian Kelso (37) and Peter Whitten (32) also scored freely, but an excellent eighth wicket partnership of 49 between Kelso and Gowtham boosted the tally to a match-winning 186 for 8.

Earlier Sloan and Whitten had a partnership of 54 for the 4th wicket, while Sloan and Andy Magee (11) added 33 for the 3rd.

In reply Dungannon fell thirty-three runs short when they were dismissed for 153 in the 42nd over.

Sixteen-year-old BRA student Jack Kane (4 for 22 off seven), and Gowtham (4 for 36 off ten) shared the bowling honours, with support from Matthew Palmer (1 for 11 off four) and Brian Boyd (1 for 32 off ten).

Commenting club secretary Jack Quinn said: “A feature of the Dungannon innings was that no fewer than six were clean bowled. There were also two lbw decisions, and the remaining two routine catches were taken by Matthew Palmer and James Wix.”
