Academy backs run riot against Ophir

ACADEMY First XV outclassed local rivals Ophir in the McCrea Cup at Roughfort on Saturday afternoon.

The Qualifying League Two side's backline produced a devastating attacking display as they ran in eight tries against a disorganised Ophir defence.

Ophir's more physical pack took the fight to the home team throughout the 80 minutes, dominating possession and territory for long periods. But it was Academy's much slicker, faster backline that was the difference between the two sides, and they used their strength and pace to run riot against an inexperienced and often disjointed visiting defence.

From the first time the Roughfort side spread the ball wide it was clear that they had the firepower in their backs to open up the Ophir defence almost at will.

Their dominance out wide was reflected in the scoring, with centre Jonny Kelly (4), fullback Chris Cooper, wingers Norman Carson and Gavin Braiden and substitute centre Rory Drysdale all crossing the tryline.

Ophir's pack continued to work hard throughout the game, and some great runs, notably from Gareth Anderson, Ivan Girvin and Neil Gray, made sure that Academy didn't have it all their own way.

Two first half penalties from outhalf Ron Bell were all Ophir had to show on the scoreboard at halftime, but their forward effort in the second 40 minutes saw second row Gareth Anderson and prop Simon Bartholemew cross for tries, one of which was converted by fullback Richard Dunseath.

Final score: Academy 60, Ophir 18.

Academy Thirds didn't fare quite as well as their senior side on Saturday as they slumped to a 47-7 defeat against Ballynahinch Sixths.

This Saturday Academy First XV will return to Qualifying League action when they travel to Donaghadee.

Meanwhile, Ophir Second XV's scheduled league game against Ballymena V's at The Cottonmount on Saturday afternoon was called off when the Braidmen revealed that they couldn't field a team.

This weekend Ophir Firsts will be hoping for an improved display when they travel to Randalstown for a rescheduled Gordon West Cup group match, while Rob Press is due to take his Second XV side to The Glynn to take on Larne Fourths in the Minor League.
