Monkstown Amateur Boxing Club added yet another champion to its ranks after Michael Bustard was crowned Ulster welterweight champion.

The 25-year-old Mossley fighter defeated Holy Trinity’s Connor Doherty (2-1) to lift the McGeough Cup in Newry on Thursday night (November 12).

A delighted Paul Johnston, who has coached Bustard for 11 years at the Cashel Drive club, told the Times: “Michael’s a dedicated trainer with a very good attitude. He’s an experienced fighter who has been in with the likes of Shane McGuigan and Conrad Cummings. He has also beaten Alfredo Meli.

“He’s a good guy inside and outside of the ring. He has just never had the luck when it came to finals. It’s a long overdue title for him.”
